Book Overview
"An RPG appeared!" -- The encounter was so sudden.
Since the appearance of the Family Computer in 1983, Showa 50's men were absorbed in video games. In '85, the game fever heated up with the release of "Super Mario Bros." and the "National Caravan Famicom Tournament"! Adventure and shooting games were booming, and new genres were emerging one after another.
The following year, in '86, "Dragon Quest" was released. Although they were confused by the new style of progressing the story with text, they experienced the fun of imagining the story. Command-based RPGs gradually became accepted, and by the time "Dragon Quest III: And Then to Legend..." was released in '88, RPGs had become a major genre in video games.
In the era when RPGs were booming, gaining popularity, growing, and reaching their peak, Showa 50's men were the generation that played video games the most enthusiastically. 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the release of the first RPG, "Dungeons & Dragons," and is the anniversary year of the release of the HD-2D "Dragon Quest III: And Then to Legend...". This issue is titled "Our RPG Story" and we want to trace the memories of our adventures in video games. Once we regain the courage and experience of those days, let's go on a new adventure!
Also, in the "S50's NOW" corner, which introduces current trends and content, we feature the rapidly growing idol group, Tokimeki♡Sendenbu, interviews with Shoji Kawamori & Haruhiko Mikimoto, staff of "Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?" for the 40th anniversary of the film's release, and a valuable interview with Sumi Shimamoto, who played the heroine in "The☆Ultraman."
